The Clovers

The Clovers were one of the first vocal rhythm and blues groups to cross over into rock and roll, with a sound based on a combination of blues and gospel.

The Clovers formed in 1946 at Armstrong High Scholl in Washington, DC, originally calling themselves "The Four Clovers". In 1950, they signed with Rainbow Records and released two singles: "Yes Sir, That's My Baby" and "When You Come Back To Me". The next year, with Atlantic records, they released "Don't You Know I Love You", which reached #1 on the national charts, followed by the hits "One Mint Julep" and "Fool Fool Fool".

The group struggled through the next few years, with various personnel changes, until 1959 when they released "Love Potion #9", their biggest hit. After this, there were further changes in the group, which split into different groups all called "The Clovers". By the early 1990s the group dissolved.
