Brook Benton was a popular R&B singer in the early 60's who is most remembered for his sad ballad, "Rainy Night in Georgia." With a rich baritone voice, and a background in gospel music, Benton's hallmark was a silky-smooth delivery. His records had a lush sound with string arrangements enhancing the traditional R&B style.
Benjamin Frankin Peay was born in Camden, South Carolina in 1931. In 1948 he moved to New York, where he performed with various gospel groups before forming his own group, the Sandmen. In 1953 the Okeh label signed him as a soloist, changing his name to Brook Benton. During the 1950s he released some minor hits, and wrote songs and helped produce albums for other artists, including Nat King Cole.
Brook Benton's career took off in 1959 when he released the hits "It's Just a Matter of Time" and "Endlessly", quickly followed by "Thank You Pretty Baby", "So Many Ways" and "Kiddio". In 1960 his duets with Dinah Washington "Baby You've Got What It Takes" and "A Rockin' Good Way" were also smash hits.
His last big hit was "Rainy Night in Georgia", released by Cotillion in 1970. Brook Benton died in 1988.
